The Story of Nia
It was in 1983 that Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas catalyzed one of the most dramatic changes to take place in the fitness industry. They took off their shoes and eliminated the main staple of aerobic exercise – repetitive jogging up and down. Carlos and Debbie went on to author Non-Impact Aerobics in 1987. Their non-impact approach, which was considered revolutionary in the 1980s, is now known as low-impact aerobics and is an integral part of mainstream aerobic exercise.
For the next decade, Debbie and Carlos explored both eastern and western modalities, studying everything from Jazz to Aikido, thus incorporating the spirit of many different movement forms into the creation of Nia. Twenty-four years later, Nia has become one of the most prominent well-being fitness programs in the world. Debbie and Carlos are regarded as the innovators of fusion fitness...combining of two or more classic exercise approaches. Nia went mainstream on January 25, 2005, with the Broadway Books release of The Nia Technique – The High-Powered Energizing Workout That Gives You A New Body and A New Life.
Today, Debbie and Carlos continue to build the Nia network worldwide. Nia has been chronicled in more then 600 newspaper and magazine articles; has appeared on numerous radio and television programs and is presented worldwide at the fitness industry’s major conventions and symposia.
At this year’s IDEA convention in Las Vegas 5 Nia programs were presented at Inner IDEA and 3 programs were presented for IDEA World. Debbie and Carlos were invited by Peter and Kathie Davis (founders of IDEA) to be founding members of Inner IDEA.
